Wahyu Dhyatmika on investigative journalism and Threats against the Free Press

The world is changing and if you are trying to be a journalist, now is a difficult time. The seemingly less than encouraging words come from Wahyu Dhyatmika (Chevening 2004/2005, International Journalism of University of Westminster) Editor in Chief to Tempo.co. There is the ongoing process of digital disruption and with it, the shift in business model which left many conventional media to their demise the last several years. There is also rise of social media contributing to the decline of trust to more mainstream media.  And lastly, as what Tempo and Dhyatmika are personally currently experiencing, is the backlash and slander to media over its strong criticism to those in power.

Selamat Datang, Pak Owen!

Maaf. Tidak lanchar,” said the the man and the room roared with laughter. Nobody in the audience seemed to mind that the newly appointed UK Ambassador for Indonesia, Owen Jenkins, speaks less than perfect Bahasa Indonesia.  In fact, on one of his several introductory sessions with the Indonesian public last July at the UK Embassy office in Jakarta, the Ambassador successfully charmed the people with his apparent effort to speak the local lingua franca and share his knowledge of local cuisines.

Farewell, dear Pak Moazzam

A first Muslim being delegated to an ambassadorial position representing the UK in Indonesia tends to attract attention. Ambassador Moazzam Tufail Malik, however, insisted from his first official press conference in Jakarta in 2014 that being a Muslim does not underline his diplomatic forte. Instead, it represented a modern face of the Great Britain, where “all nationalities and race are equals and share similar opportunities to success in the UK”.

Noor Huda Ismail and the Fight against Radicalism

Chevening Youth Forum 2019 Southeast Asia Edition

The Chevening Youth Forum – South East Asia Edition (CYF SEA) is a platform to bring together Chevening Alumni and up to 250 young future leaders fromacross Southeast Asia to discuss insights, challenges and opportunities to the progress and development of ASEAN, aimed at creating opportunity for Chevening alumni members to contribute to the development of the ASEAN region through engagements with the young future leaders.

 

The inaugural forum originally launched as ASEAN Chevening Youth Forum (ASEAN CYF) was successfully convened by Chevening Alumni Malaysia and Chevening Alumni Brunei in March 2018 in  Kuala Lumpur. The 2nd Edition of this Forum is jointly hosted by Chevening Alumni Indonesia and Chevening Alumni Brunei and will focus on the theme “Empowering Youth for ASEAN 4.0” to collectively explore how youth can lead ASEAN into the 4th Industrial Revolution.

 

The forum format consists of forum sessions, capacity building sessions as well as open space sessions with topics ranging from unpacking industrial revolution in ASEAN, human capital development, sustainable development agenda, entrepreneurship & MSMEs and innovation among others.
